Dutton Report Special: A Special Thanks to our Veterans

All too often it is easy for all of us to take our freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis for granted. However, it seems appropriate that a week after most of us went to the polls to choose our next president, along with our other freely elected state and federal officials, that we pay tribute to the men and women responsible for the freedoms we enjoy today – our veterans.

For those interested in the history of why Nov. 11th was selected as Veterans Day, it was chosen because the end of hostilities of the First World War went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

In 1915, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) of the
Canadian Army, wrote:

Some of you know from my old blogs that I have been working on a website for some missionaries in Gallup, New Mexico. I asked them to get me an audio recording of a Navajo playing “Amazing Grace” on a Navajo Flute. Neither they nor I could find an appropriate recording for the website.

Historic Election

This election season from the national to the state level has been one for the history books. Regardless of the outcome we can all be proud of how our democracy performed and of how hard all the candidates fought to represent their respective constituents. And now at the end of the campaigns and in the best tradition of our democracy, the candidates will respect the results and wish the winner of the contests the best of luck in fulfilling the oath of their office.

I’m curious as I’m learning all over what it means to be a government employee. I forgot what it is like to work for someone who encourages civic pride, such as encouraging his employees to exercise their right to vote versus practically ridiculing employees for such things such as at my last department. Today we received an email inviting us to wear clothing representing our favorite branch of the military on Monday in honor of all the veterans who work for our department. At my last department I had a supervisor who told staff how much she hated veterans and didn’t want any in her unit. There was even argument over whether or not we could have an American flag in our cubicles. What a difference a change of scenery makes! So what is your department doing to honor veterans next week?

Veterans Day - A day to thank those who have served

Next week, America celebrates Veterans Day in honor of the millions of men and women who bravely served our country – many of them sacrificing their lives for the sake of our freedom.

Veterans Day celebrations began in November 1919 when the Armistice was signed at the conclusion of World War I. President Woodrow Wilson said: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
