Dear Friend:

I have released a report detailing the impact of the nation’s recession on California’s counties and cities. The report, which was based on interviews conducted with officials in 20 cities and all 58 counties, paints a stark picture of the economic strains felt across California. Dear Friend:

The national unemployment rate currently stands at a 14-year high of 6.5 percent.  And California unemployment stands at 8.2 percent, the third-highest rate in the country.  These numbers come as another indicator of the deep economic troubles affecting our nation.

Dear Friend:

I recently held a news conference in Washington with several of my Senate colleagues who serve on the Committee on Environment and Public Works to look ahead to the new Congress and the steps we are planning to address several issues, including the economic recovery, clean energy technologies, and global warming. By using this link, you can read the transcript of my statement, including the description of the earliest legislation that I plan to introduce in January.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer

Dear Friend:

While many people are struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times, some people are responding with criminal schemes that take advantage of others. Many law enforcement agencies report an increase in the number of reported scams and fraudulent schemes. The timing of this increase seems to correspond to our nation’s deepening economic struggles.
