Dutton Report Alert: Get Involved In Shaping The SB Sun’s Official Positions

Over the past several months I’ve heard comments from many of you about the coverage of stories and events that have appeared in the San Bernardino Sun, particularly the positions taken on the editorial pages of the newspaper.

Dutton Report Special: Worse Than Coal in Your Stocking!

It was difficult to believe what I was hearing during today’s Senate floor session.

Not only were Senate Democrats actually passing legislation, on a simple majority vote, calling tax increases “fees”, but one Democrat Senator, had the audacity to call this tax increase a “holiday gift” for Californians.

Dutton Report Special: Ill Conceived AB 32 Scoping Plan Approved

Yesterday, the Air Resources Board approved the AB 32 Scoping Plan that I believe will not have any real affect in reducing global warming, but will add yet another financial burden on California’s businesses and individuals when they can afford it least.

Like every other resident in California, I care about our environment. However, I am troubled that the ARB decided to move ahead and adopt a plan that will not achieve the desired result of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but will harm this state’s fragile economy.

Dutton Report Alert: Senator Dutton Calls on Governor Schwarzenegger to Invoke Prop. 58

Sen. Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) has urged Governor Schwarzenegger to use his powers under Proposition 58 to call the Legislature into Special Session on Dec. 1 to deal with the state’s fiscal crisis following the defeat of the budget proposal today.

“To fix the budget we must have a healthy economy, not focus solely on raising taxes,” Senator Dutton said. “I’m calling on the governor to use provisions under Proposition 58 when the new Legislature is sworn in next week and to have the focus only on legislation that will stimulate the economy and fix California’s budget. All other legislation needs to be delayed until we can once and for all get our fiscal house in order. Today’s budget proposal did not accomplish that.”

Dutton Report Special: Cut, Don’t Tax

This op-ed by Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill was published in the Riverside Press Enterprise and I thought it presented my position about the economy and taxes very effectively.

Cut, Don’t Tax
Now is not the time to pile new expenses on Californians

By DAVE COGDILL

The global financial crisis — including the federal bailout of the national banking system — has understandably dominated the news in recent weeks.

In Sacramento, however, our attention is focused on the state’s own troubled finances, only some of which can be traced to the mortgage meltdown and other factors that underpin the worldwide fiscal troubles.

Dutton Report Alert: San Bernardino - Riverside Unemployment Rate Increases to 9.5 %

California’s Economic Development Department released California’s unemployment figures for October and it is probably not surprising to anyone that the state’s jobless rate continues to rise, including in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties where the jobless rate increased from 9.1 percent in September to 9.5 percent in October.

The two-county rate remains well above the state unemployment rate of 8.2 percent for October.

Dutton Report: November 2008

Budget Continues to Dominate

As most of you are aware, Governor Schwarzenegger has called a special session of the Legislature to deal with the state’s budget deficit that is now projected to be $28 billion over the next 19 months.

The governor has proposed several tax increases including increasing the sales tax by 1.5 percent, taxing sporting events and adding a 5 cent per drink tax to name a few to budget the gaping hole between spending and revenue.

Dutton Report Special: A Special Thanks to our Veterans

All too often it is easy for all of us to take our freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis for granted. However, it seems appropriate that a week after most of us went to the polls to choose our next president, along with our other freely elected state and federal officials, that we pay tribute to the men and women responsible for the freedoms we enjoy today – our veterans.

For those interested in the history of why Nov. 11th was selected as Veterans Day, it was chosen because the end of hostilities of the First World War went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

From Senator Dutton . . .

Sen. Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) issued the following statement following his victory for a second term representing the 31st District in the California State Senate.

“I am honored and humbled that the people of the 31st Senate District have given me the chance to represent them for a second term in the California State Senate,” Senator Dutton said. “I take this responsibility seriously and look forward to the challenges ahead over the next four years.”

First elected to the State Assembly in 2002, Senator Dutton was elected to his first term in the Senate in November 2004.

Senator Dutton said his top priorities will be the challenges of balancing the state’s budget, that is now projected to have a deficit of $10 billion for the remainder of this fiscal year, and stimulating the economy in order to create jobs.

Senator Dutton believes both issues are directly related.

“With the steady loss of jobs and high unemployment in California, I think it’s important to create a plan that will encourage job creation and retention,” Senator Dutton said. “I do not believe the solution to California’s fiscal problems would be to raise taxes on hard working Californians. We need to find ways to generate more jobs in this state and that will in turn create more revenue to fund the vital programs we all feel are necessary like public safety and education.”

Senator Dutton will officially be sworn in for his second term on December 1. However, Senator Dutton and the other members of the Legislature are scheduled to Sacramento for a Special Session later this month to deal with the state’s budget deficit.
