Here is the official press release announcing the election of Supervisor Gary Ovitt as chairman and Supervisor Josie Gonzales as vice chairman. I find it interesting that they included a rather unusual quote from Supervisor Paul Biane, outgoing chairman, but nothing from Supervisor Gonzales. Here it is: Chairman

No “happy holidays” or “season’s greetings” politically correct baloney. Pretty good for an elected official. That was nice. Merry Christmas to you and your family too!

Local partnership a good approach
Posted: 12/22/2008 07:28:31 PM PST
We like what county Supervisors Chairman Paul Biane is trying to accomplish with the newly formed Inland Empire Economic Recovery Corp.
We just hope the effort can attract enough capital to make a difference in the moribund Inland Empire housing market.

San Bernardino County officials should not be rushing to throw $2.5 million at a hastily created and still nebulous plan to rescue foreclosed homes. A program with too many unanswered questions in a county with a history of sloppy ethics calls for skepticism, not speed.
The county Board of Supervisors this week wisely postponed action until January on a $2.5 million contract with the new Inland Empire Economic Recovery Corp. The plan calls for local investors to buy and refurbish foreclosed homes, and sell them to the nonprofit corporation. The corporation would then sell the houses to qualified buyers.

Well, we’re getting very close to Christmas and not a word from our Chairman wishing employees a happy and safe holiday season. Although I’m sure he has at some point, I cannot remember a single instance in his two years as chairman where Paul Biane has ever communicated with employees. Since his reign will be over in 18 days, I guess we should not expect more. This is indicative of his lack of respect for his position and for the employees of this organization he leads.

I finally asked someone who would know and the vote will take place on January 6, 2009. One source tells me it’s a done deal that Mitzelfelt will kick Josie to the curb and get himself elected as vice chairman; another source tells me the fight is still going on with a third supervisor possibly taking the position.

Jessica wrote an article about rebuilding the Republican Party. Things have been a bit funky over there for a while and the site no longer works like it used to. I put a comment on this article over there, but at least I cannot read comments on my Blackberry because of the new format. So I reprinted my comment below:
It is more than just getting back to principles; it’s finding local leaders with ethics, which I’m not sure is possible. How many of the current elected leaders are not accepting questionable campaign contributions, not using illegal drugs, not abusing alcohol, not cheating on their significant others, not lying to constituents and taxpayers, not cutting unethical backroom deals for their own benefit, and/or not using taxpayer money for their own interests? It’s hard to name more than a handful that are not participating in at least one of those activities, if you can name any. Even Neil Derry, who ran on a platform of ethics reform, has a huge lie on his county website if my sources are correct. This is no honor in this party.

The following comment was made over on Lauren’s Blog: deBeer said:
Was this “allocation” from their campaign war chests or from the taxpayer? If it was their money then good for them. If it was taxpayers money, the entire tone of the article should have been different.
IMO this is not what taxpayers money should be used for.
I have to agree. Not to be a Scrooge or anything, but taxpayer money supports the poor and homeless already through hundreds of different programs to the tune of billions of dollars in costs for the US taxpayer. No one should go hungry. But at the same time, this is not a legitimate use of their discretionary funds, if that is in fact what was used to pay for the turkeys. I have little doubt the recipients were made aware of who donated the turkeys in hopes of a vote at the next election. Considering the size of their campaign war chests, all five supervisors could have easily afforded to contribute to this effort without it costing the taxpayer a dime.

From the county:
Thousands of deserving residents enjoyed a hot, holiday meal this Thanksgiving, due in part to the continued partnership between San Bernardino County Supervisors Paul Biane and Josie Gonzales.
This year the supervisors each allocated $4,000 used to purchase 700 turkeys.

For those new to my blogs, I have been a Republican my entire life. The first election I was old enough to vote in was the 1980 Presidential Election and was very proud to vote for Ronald Reagan. Since 1980 I have only voted for a non-Republican for a significant office a time or two. It seems to me that there was a Democratic Attorney General and/or Lieutenant Governor I may have voted for at one time.
This year I swore I was going to vote for the Democratic nominees for all offices except president, which I planned to vote third party until Governor Sarah Palin was added to the ticket. In the end, I voted a straight Republican ticket, not necessarily because I supported the candidates, but because I fear where our party is headed, especially in San Bernardino County.

Considering all the calls for Bill’s head on a platter by the public, I was a little surprised to see the comments on this article over on the Sun’s site. There suddenly seems to be a lot more animosity towards Paul. It makes one wish anonymous comments not be allowed as one has to wonder the source.

Tensions between San Bernardino County’s Board of Supervisors and Assessor Bill Postmus continue to rise.
Board Chairman Paul Biane plans to ask his colleagues Tuesday to censure Postmus for refusing to come before them and answer questions about an investigation of the Assessor’s Office and allegations that Postmus is a drug addict. A censure does not have any enforceable action; instead, it is essentially an admonishment.
