From the DP: Caldwell accusation baffles county

VICTORVILLE • Though Councilman Terry Caldwell recently condemned plans for the city to accept trash for the entire San Bernardino County, officials are perplexed and say his accusations are unfounded.

“The county of San Bernardino has adopted a plan to close the landfills on the other side of Cajon Pass,” said Caldwell, “And the current plan is to locate all of the disposal at the existing landfill site on I-15 — the pyramid.”

However county officials said Wednesday this plan simply doesn’t exist.

“I think that the desert cities have always been worried about that, that the long-term capacity might dry up in the valley,” said Peter Wulfman, manager of the county’s solid waste division. “But at this point in time it’s not a reality.”

Wulfman said the county approved an expansion to the current Victorville landfill in 2004, and no new plans have come through since. Any further expansion, he said, would simply add to the current site and not produce further landfills.

Rather than shutting down its valley landfills, Wulfman said the county plans to expand those sites. Even looking 20 years into the future, Wulfman believes there will be alternative technologies that will allow the San Bernardino Valley to continue accepting waste in some capacity without moving all trash to the High Desert.

Yeah, “alternative technologies” like shooting it into outer-space? Just like the County official said, moving all trash to the High Desert wouldn’t be required in the next 20 years, just most of it right (Attn: tricky gov’t lingo “not all” = “most”). And what about after 20 years, then all of it would be dumped there (High Desert)? That really sounds like a great plan and I’m sure that the County’s investment into these so called “alternative technologies” will go a long way to prove it (@ a County where alternative technologies = recycling).

Trash =$$$$$$. You also kind of need, well, to put it delicately….LAND. Not to far from the world so as to make it expensive to haul (anyone remember rail cycle?) but also not next to the nearest elementary school.

Oooh, Oooh, Ooooh! Just got a great idea! lets bulldoze most of San Bernardino and put the trash there! Then Pat could pay for operation phoenix, axe his sales tax scheme, put more warehouses in areas not turned in to landfill space, and displace 50% of the criminals currently living in the valley area.

Oops, but then the criminals will need a place to live…that leaves Colton, Rialto and the high desert (Morongo is just too far). Just a thought.

Remember VV, trash =$$$$$$. And it’s not like you don’t need a hill or some other type of terrain besides “flat”.

Trash is the most expensive game that’s played in SoCal, then there’s water a very close second.
