I desperately needed a few days away from doctors, politics, depositions, etc., and decided to take this weekend off except for a little maintenance on the blog. Saturday I took the dogs for a drive out to the California Poppy Preseve. The poppies are fading fast and there are not many left. If you’d like to see the pictures, here is the Flickr slideshow. To view the captions, click on the “i” that appears in the center of the first picture for the first few seconds. I’m still not thrilled with the quality of the pictures with this camera, but I’m working on it to see what is wrong. Nothing seems to be perfectly focused.
Yesterday, my activities centered around church. As I wrote in the “Sundays” entry, I went to church yesterday morning, took communion, and listened to some good music. Last night was the special service with Dave Roever. I just can’t recommend him enough for those who have not heard him speak. He is very entertaining. When you hear all that he has faced in his life, it makes one’s own problems seem trivial. It was a very enjoyable evening.

The dogs never went into the actual preserve. For that matter, neither did I because I knew the dogs couldn’t go on the trail and it was too hot to leave them in the truck. The poppies in the preserve were gone anyway. You can see some of the preserve in the background. So we went to all the areas right around the preserve. I made a point of posing the dogs where they would not be squashing poppies. I think one little poppy might have been squashed because it was so small I didn’t notice it until afterwards, but that’s it. I put them on the dirt in areas where there were poppies all around them. The dogs are very good about obeying “sit” commands until I release them. We were a lot nicer to the fauna than any of the humans I saw who were squishing everything in sight to get to the “right” place to have their pictures taken.
I try very hard to be responsible with the dogs. I even clean up after them in public places which is more than can be said for most pet owners. I appreciate the fact that many places welcome dogs and I don’t want to give those places a reason to change their minds. I also try not to be the stereotypical dog owner at places where dogs are not so welcome. When I’m photographing the dogs out in nature, I try to place them where no damage will be done. Since they will stay where placed I can adjust my angle to hide the fact that they are usually sitting in dirt or weeds. Sometimes I’m more successful than others and often the quality of the photograph suffers because I don’t want to destroy the fauna.
